Sports Cars With a Lot of Horses Under One Hood

June 29th, 2009
Muna wa Wanjiru asked:

For the avid sports cars enthusiast there’s nothing more breathtaking and awe inspiring than coming face to face with their fantasies, seeing them in action and even better, catching a ride in them.

Unfortunately the more drool-worthy sports cars are beyond the price range of most of the population and fall more into the range of expensive cars. However, this doesn’t make them any less of a sports car, just something that is God-like in status.

Sports cars for the most part come in many different makes and models, as well as coming in many different price ranges as evidenced by one of the most powerful sports cars ever to be made road worthy, the Bugatti Veyron.

Said to be the “fastest ever street-legal” car in the world this little baby is advertised as having 1001 horsepower. That’s a lot of horses under one hood.

For those of you who don’t know this, sports cars are high performance, high acceleration cars designed with precision handling in mind. This means that they should ideally be able to stop on a dime, as the saying goes.

Most true sports cars you will find are two door cars which are low slung and have a modicum of passenger room. All sports cars will also have a carriage design which is pleasing to the eye to say the least and which, in some cases, looks futuristic.

Such high conception sports cars can however be of the expensive type and out of the range for most people. The lower price-range sports cars however will have the same base features and functionality while losing out on some of their sleek looks and in some cases their horsepower.

For most people who dream of owning a sports car however, this is alright because what they really want is the joy of owning one of the sought after sports cars. This means that more and more makes of new sports cars are coming past the conception stage and reaching the light of day in the low- to mid-range consumer markets.

That’s for the low- to mid-range sports cars, but what about the mid- to high-range sports cars. Where do they come into the picture? Right where they belong actually, in the center of the upper middle class echelons.

These car enthusiasts will not only be able to pay for the higher-end sports car models, they will also be able to afford the upkeep and the insurance payments as well! And what do all sports car enthusiasts of all levels do? They show off their sports cars and bask in the reflected glory of the sleek steel and power which they have the good fortune to own.

Performance Is Married With Style In Exotic Sports Cars

June 28th, 2009
Gregg Hall asked:

What is it that really defines an exotic car? This is a word that is thrown about by a lot of people and used in describing things as varied as food and even exotic beauty. The naming of a car as an exotic sports car takes a little more consideration.

The sleek and aerodynamic looks of true exotic sports cars are much more than just appearance. The slick look of these beauties also contributes to their speed as they cut through the air with very little resistance or friction. The true high performance exotic sports car is as fast as it looks.

With true exotic sports cars the design is crucial to giving the vehicle that designation and is a must for the serious car enthusiast. The car makers are well aware of this fact and the makers of the high end vehicles pay particular attention to creating standout designs that draw attention and gather crowds of onlookers wherever they are parked.

Car makers such as Ferrari actually outsource the design of their vehicles such as the way that they had Pininfarina design the ‘02 ENZO. Another newer model that comes to mind which draws crowds is the new Lotus Elise. We saw one outside of a local restaurant last week and everyone who saw it walked over and stared at it.

While design is what makes the exotic stand out from the mere mortal vehicle it is sheer performance that is what the high end auto enthusiast seeks. The speed and handling while maintaining high speeds and hugging tight curves are the factors that truly set them apart. Think about it, the first thing that comes to mind is how fast the car is, how fast is goes from zero to sixty. Beauty really must be more than skin deep when it comes to a true high performance automobile like the 1994 Dauer 962 LeMans which currently holds the record for fastest sports car with a zero to sixty time of 2.6 seconds.

True exotics are limited production automobiles and in many cases there is a waiting list for them. This is another thing that increases the appeal, the fact that you don’t see one at every stop light, except maybe in South Beach.

Even people who don’t consider themselves to be car enthusiasts can easily name some of the more notable makers such as Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche and Lotus. Personally, I like the new Lotus Elise since it is a vehicle that is somewhat more affordable at under 50k. If you get a chance to see one up close or you are lucky enough to be able to drive one you will see what I mean. I thought that at 6′3″ and 240 pounds I wouldn’t be able to get in one but they are deceptively roomy.

Some Of The Factors To Consider When Buying A Sports Car

June 26th, 2009
Gregg Hall asked:

Many people with a fat wallet and a large bank account find themselves pondering what they can spend all their money on. Answer is a brand new sports car that can run the quarter mile in under 11 sec that’s what I would spend my money on.

Here is how to look at buying a brand new sports car, the good ways and the bad ways.

People who are obsessed with sports cars can find every reason why to buy one and every reason why they shouldn’t own one. Some of these pros and cons are listed below.

Sports cars not only fit the lifestyles of the rich and the famous but with every person with a bit of money and wanting to spend it on a nice ride. Many of these sports cars come stock with horsepower going over 500 some with way more like Lamborghinis or Porsches.

Small sporty convertibles will depreciate in value of the years and will get down to worth less then when you bought it. This really depends on the car; Corvettes from the sixties are worth way more now than they were then.

People who love spending all their money on these types of cars can choose between coupes or convertibles I personally like imports over anything I would take a Supra over a high end sports car today. That is a turbo Supra of course.

Most sports cars with an automatic transmission, like most other vehicles, will be worth more than the ones with a standard transmission. There are some exceptions with true sports cars and with sports cars that really need the ability to benefit from the torque that comes from using a manual transmission.

A lot of sports cars are prone to having problems, some of their parts are exotic and may be hard to find. When or if you buy a sports car never expect to get back what you paid for it. These cars are just another way to get around. Many become garage babies and are never run.

Of course driving an expensive sports car means paying a lot more for gas because they usually have the motor with a v-8 or v-12 which will get you about 15 miles to the gallon if you are lucky. This is also a good reason why more people should drive an import, good gas mileage plus high performance.

On the other side of the table though sports cars are already fast when you buy them, but like they say you can make a car as fast as your billfold is fat. That is the beauty of imports, over exotics. If you don’t have the money for a 300k factory vehicle you can always spend a tenth of that and have one probably just as fast with the right mechanic.

All About Exotic Sports Cars

June 19th, 2009
Alexis Masterson asked:

For many owning a sports car is a lifelong goal they aspire to. Even as children we are almost programmed to turn and look at the beautiful sleek sports car as it cruises through the town. Sports cars are the zenith of motoring and something which people dedicate their lives to. Benetton shops were created purely to fund one man’s love for racing and that is just one well known example.

Everyone can name at least one sports car, Ferrari’s, Porsches, Bentley, Aston Martin, Porsche, Lotus and Lamborghini to name just a few. So what is the appeal of such unobtainable cars? Sports cars aren’t for convenience or practicalities; they are purely made to be beautiful and luxurious. Why is it that so many of our own screen hero’s don’t drive practical 4×4’s or be economically friendly and cycle? Can we really picture James Bond turning up to save the world in a 5 door hatchback? No. Sports cars do exactly what they say on the tin. They are fast; they only hold 2 people and don’t worry about space for things like groceries.

Sports cars were initially manufactured for the affluent classes as the “ordinary” cars of the day were dull and boring and practical. Sports cars provided the luxury of speed, safety and comfort. With ordinary cars becoming better looking, more comfortable and safer and the sports cars becoming economically unsound the market is dropping. People are driving now not for pleasure but because they have to. Public transport is becoming more expensive and with town and cities spreading ever wider and wider the need to drive is becoming more prevalent. For those who buying a car is not a necessity but a pleasure, you can complete your man about town image by buying the latest fashion and accessories from Armani, Brioni (Suit maker for James Bond), BOSS, Kiton and Ralph Lauren or expensive cigars and watches like Cartier and Breitling from some of web sites that offer these products at more reasonable prices.

Hopefully, sometime soon we will remember why we love the dream of sports cars and forget our practical hatchbacks.

Sports Cars: Getting Started on Your Need for Speed

June 18th, 2009
Uchenna Ani-Okoye asked:

If high acceleration, top speed, and appearance are what you want in a vehicle, then a sports car is probably what you’re looking for. Sports cars are a $4.5 billion industry with about 55,000 units sold annually.

Sports cars are built as performance vehicles - meaning they are to be pushed in ways regular cars can’t. For example, acceleration is often no more than 5 seconds to go from 0 to 100 mph. As it is more difficult to manoeuvre a speeding object, sports cars are specially designed to be handled at top speeds.

The term ’sporty’ was coined to refer to a sleek but robust design that exudes a powerful persona for the person behind the wheel. What follows is a basic run-through of sports cars out in the marketplace - their general designs and layout, as well as a listing of the more popular models and makers.

- FF - front engine, front wheel drive.

The FF layout has a moderate capacity for high speed handling and is seen in select models such as the Fiat Coup, and the Lotus Elan M100.

- FR - front engine, rear wheel drive

Considered the ‘classic’ sports car layout, the engine drives the rear wheels but keeps the weight off the back. The FR is good at drifting corners while still maintaining control. Mercedes-Benz is recognized for using this layout for its models.

- RR - rear engine, rear wheel drive

With the engine at the back driving the rear wheels, weight placement on a RR layout provides excellent traction for a car. However, without auxiliary driving aids like stability control, handling becomes difficult. As of today, the only maker who keeps the RR layout for its cars is Porche.

AWD - all wheel drive

An AWD layout provides the easiest handling, making it ideal for those who are just starting out with sports cars. Audi started the widespread use of this technique with the Quattro. Japanese manufacturers like Mitsubishi used this layout to increase handling making it an excellent rally car.

Because of higher restrictions in the states, sports car manufacturers are more prevalent in Europe than in America. Nevertheless, American brands are in equal competition with its European and Asian counterparts. Some recognized makers and models are:

Alfa Romeo

Alpine

Aston Martin

Austin-Healey

BMW

Bugatti

Caterham

Davrian

De Lorean

Ferrari

Fisker

Jaguar

Koenigsegg

Lamborghini

Lotus

McLaren

Maserati

MG

Morgan

Panoz

Porsche

Triumph

TVR

Vector

Now that you’ve gotten started, take your next step by discovering the excitement a sports car can bring you today, just like it has for generations.
